چکیده

The maximum volume of liquid bridge left between two vertically mounted spherical particles has been theoretically determined and experimentally measured. As the gravitational effect has not been neglected in the theoretical model, the liquid interface profile is nonsymmetrical around the X-axis. Symmetry in the interface profile only occurs when either the particle size ratio or the gravitational force becomes zero. In this paper, some equations are derived as a function of the spheres' sizes, gap width, liquid density, surface tension and body force ( gravity/centrifugal) to estimate the maximum amount of liquid that can be held between the two solid spheres. Then a comparison is made between the result based on these equations and several experimental results. Keyword: Capillary Liquid Holdup; Centrifuge; Drainage Bed; Particle; Hydrodynamics.

Flow Pattern and Oil Holdup Prediction in Vertical Oil–Water Two–Phase Flow Using Pressure Fluctuation Signal

In this work, the feasibility of flow pattern and oil hold up the prediction for vertical upward oil–water two–phase flow using pressure fluctuation signals was experimentally investigated. Water and diesel fuel were selected as immiscible liquids. Oil hold up was measured by Quick Closing Valve (QCV) technique, and five flow patterns were identified using high-speed photo...

Experimental study of two and three phase flows in large diameter inclined pipes

Steady-state and transient experiments of water–gas, oil–water and oil–water–gas multiphase flows were conducted on a transparent 11 m long, 15 cm diameter, inclinable pipe using kerosene, tap water and nitrogen. The pipe inclination was varied from 0 (vertical) to 92 and the flow rates of each phase were varied over wide ranges. Fast-acting valves enabled the trapping of the fluid flowing in t...

Determination of optimum gas holdup conditions in a three-phase fluidized bed by genetic algorithm

Experiments have been carried out in a 0.1 m internal diameter, 1.88 m height vertical Plexiglas column with an antenna type modified air sparger in the gas-liquid distributor section. This arrangement provides uniform mixing of the fluids, ensures the gas entering the fluidizing section as fine bubbles and reduces the pressure drop encountered through a conventional distributor used for the pu...

Positive curvature effects and interparticle capillary condensation during nitrogen adsorption in particulate porous materials.

The adsorption of nitrogen in a collection of spheres that touch or merge in a sintering-like manner is modeled using a Derjaguin-Broeckhof-de Boer approach. The proposed model accounts for both positive curvature effects and for capillary condensation at the contact between two spheres. A methodology is proposed to fit the P/P(0)>0.4 adsorption region with the coordination number of the sphere...
